Employees Provident Fund and plight of pensioners

There are lakhs of industrial workers and widows of deceased workmen who are covered by the provident fund pension in India. The pension amounts have not been revised for the past 20 years. Since this group is unorganised and scattered from Kashmir To Kanyakumary, Successive governments have neglected this lot. The Communist parties have also not taken interest in the matter.
It is fervently hoped that Mr. Rahul Gandhi will help this cause.

  2. As on March 31, 2010, there were 35 lakh EPFO pensioners of which 14 lakh get a monthly pension of less than Rs 500.and the number of EPFO pensioners getting a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 is 7 lakh. There are cases where pensioners are getting a monthly pension as low as Rs 12 and Rs 38.
As per press reports, the Employees' Provident Fund Trust Board had decided to enhance the minimum monthly pension to Rs 1,000.But the Finance Ministry objected to this proposal on the ground that raising the minimum pension to Rs 1,000 would lead to an additional burden of Rs 1,100 crore a year which the ministry was “not ready to take”.The Union Cabinet has appointed a sub-committee under the Chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary, and including secretaries of a few other departments like Finance and Labour, which is finding a “way out”.
I had sent a representation to the President of India, who forwarded the same to the EPFO Organisation, which has sent me a reply dated 2/1/2014 as follows:-
“The issue pertaining to raising of minimum pension is under active consideration of appropriate authority. As soon as decision is made same shall be placed on public domain”.
Let us hope that the GOI, takes a quick decision in the Matter!!!
